The Best 12V Solar Kit for a Shed or Garden Office

Running a mains cable to a shed means trenching, armoured cable and often an electrician — easily several hundred pounds before you have switched on a single light. For most sheds and garden offices, a small 12V solar system does the job for less, with no groundwork and no electrician required.

Start with what you want to run

Just lighting and charging? This is the easiest win. LED strips or bulbs draw a few watts; a phone charger similar. A system of 20–50W of solar and a modest battery covers evening light in a shed or summerhouse all year.

A garden office? A laptop (40–60W while charging), a monitor, LED lighting and a router add up to roughly 300–500Wh across a working day. That calls for 150–250W of solar with a 100Ah+ battery — still very achievable on a shed roof.

Power tools or heating? Be realistic: heaters, kettles and large workshop machines are beyond a small 12V system. For those, look at a complete off-grid system — more on that below.

Three tips before you buy

Face the panel south if you can — even a rough southerly aspect beats a perfect east-facing install. Size the battery for two days of use, so one cloudy day never leaves you dark. And spend the small premium on an MPPT controller if your panel is 100W or more; in British light it pays for itself.
