Flexible vs Rigid Solar Panels: Which Is Right for Your Van or Boat?

Rigid, semi-flexible, and folding solar panels all convert sunlight the same way — the difference is in how and where you can fit them, how long they last, and what compromises you're making for that flexibility.

Rigid framed panels

These are the traditional aluminium-framed panels, usually toughened glass over monocrystalline or polycrystalline cells. They're the most efficient and durable option, typically carrying the longest warranties (often 10-25 years), and they handle heat well because they sit slightly proud of the roof with an air gap for cooling.

Best for: permanent installations on motorhomes, static boats, sheds, and cabins where roof space and weight aren't tightly constrained, and where you want the panel to still be performing well in a decade.

Trade-offs: added roof height, require mounting rails or brackets, heavier than flexible alternatives.

Semi-flexible panels

Built with thinner cells (often monocrystalline) laminated onto a bendable backing — usually fibreglass-reinforced or ETFE-coated — these can curve to a moderate radius, sit almost flush to a curved roof, and weigh a fraction of a rigid panel.

Best for: campervans and boats with curved roofs, low-profile installations where you don't want to add height, and weight-sensitive builds.

Trade-offs: because they're usually adhered or screwed directly to the roof with no air gap, they run hotter in direct sun, which slightly reduces efficiency compared to a rigid panel of the same rated wattage. Reinforced ETFE-coated panels (rather than basic laminate) hold up notably better to flexing, UV, and years of outdoor use — worth the difference in price if you want longevity.

CIGS flexible panels

A different technology again — thin-film cells that can bend further than crystalline semi-flexible panels and tolerate partial shading better, at a lower efficiency-per-square-metre. Useful for irregular surfaces or applications where flexibility matters more than squeezing maximum watts into a given area.

Folding panels and portable kits

Not roof-mounted at all — these unfold like a briefcase and stand or lean wherever the sun is, connected back to the battery by cable. They suit anyone who wants solar without a permanent roof fixture, or who wants to move the panel independently of the vehicle (parking in shade, panel in sun).

Best for: occasional/weekend use, rentals or vehicles you don't want to drill into, and situations where you want to reposition the panel through the day.

Trade-offs: need to be set up and packed away each time, and are more exposed to accidental damage or theft than a fixed panel.

So which one should you choose?

  • Flat roof, permanent fit, want it to last: rigid framed panel
  • Curved roof, low profile, weight matters: semi-flexible (reinforced ETFE for best durability)
  • Awkward or curved surface, partial shading expected: flexible CIGS
